Fans of the holidays, specifically Halloween may be happy to learn that a movie about Spirit Halloween, an annual store that opens during the witching season and sells Halloween-themed costumes and other spine-chilling apparel and novelties, is in production and has already finished filming.
In an effort to give families a fun new family-friendly Halloween experience, the popular store has partnered up with Strike Back Studios, Hideout Pictures, and Particular Crowd to launch the film entitled, simply, Spirit Halloween.
She’s All That’s Rachel Leigh Cook and Back to the Future icon, Christopher Lloyd will feature in the film.
Marla Gibbs (El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie) will play the lead role, and Donavan Colan (Zoe), Dylan Frankel (Raven’s Home), Jaiden Smith (Blue Bloods), and Marissa Reyes (Raven’s Home) also star. Billie Bates provides the screenplay for David Poag’s directorial debut. Executive producing are Clay Epstein, Tomás’ Yanelevich, Peter Bevan, Mariana Sanjurjo, and Noor Ahmed of Strike Back Studios. You can view the official tagline below:
“When a new Spirit Halloween store appears in a deserted strip mall, three middle-school friends who think they’ve outgrown trick-or-treating make a dare to spend the night locked inside the store Halloween night. But they soon find out that the store is haunted by an angry evil spirit who has possessed the creepy animatronic characters. The kids embark on a thrilling and spooky adventure in order to survive the night and avoid becoming possessed themselves.”
“One of the reasons I immediately connected with the script is it is very much inspired by some of my favorite kid adventure films growing up from The Goonies, Gremlins, Monster Squad and so many great films made by Amblin Entertainment,” Ahmed noted.
If one store adaptation is simply not enough for you (who knew these were a thing?) then how about another! (yes, really)
Remember Blockbuster Video?
One more very famous and iconic store that still holds a flame in the hearts of many will receive a live-action adaptation, only this one will be for small screens. There will soon be a brand-new sitcom on Netflix based in the last ever Blockbuster store in the U.S.
This series is set to star Randall Park and Melissa Fumero, as well as Tyler Alvarez, Madeleine Arthur, Olga Merediz, JB Smoove, and Kamaia Fairburn.
Blockbuster Video stores are often viewed as nostalgic reminders of simpler times for people who grew up in the 80s and 90s. This is because there were no streaming services available and the only way to watch the newest releases was to physically go to one of their stores.
When Netflix was still in its infancy, Blockbuster had the opportunity to buy it. But that didn’t happen, making the irony of Netflix now ordering a comedy series about a Blockbuster store all the more striking,
In addition, Netflix is also streaming the documentary, “The Last Blockbuster.”
For those concerned about authenticity, never fear, In addition to using the store’s logo and uniforms, the producers have acquired the Blockbuster rights as well so expect everything to look just right.
In contrast to Blockbuster Video, which has been relegated to the video bin of history, Spirit Halloween as both a business and store is still thriving and enjoys booming business every October when they open their doors. In addition to being a favorite place to visit for horror fans, it is also a must-go place for Halloween lovers of every age.
Spirit Halloween was reportedly filmed earlier this year, and the film will be released later in 2022, most likely in time for Halloween. As of yet, The Last Blockbuster does not have a release date and is still in production but expect it to show up on Netflix before too long.
